What Strategies Do You Use In Order To Feel Empowered?
When you learn and apply ways to feel empowered, your life will go from bumbling along to inspired. And no, you don’t need to be in a disempowered hole, we can all benefit from an uplift in our personal power.
Right now, imagine how you would show up in life with one or two more levels of empowerment?
Within Life coaching and Transformation coaching, there are numerous strategies to help people become empowered. I’m going to share three but there are hundreds.
There is no one size fits all when it comes to empowerment.
Each empowerment strategy is most effective if it’s nuanced to your desired outcome AND attuned to existing feelings of disempowerment.
You don’t wake up one day and become disempowered, so your task is to understand the cause, the triggers, the impact, how often and how long it’s affected you. Developing self-awareness through journaling will give you all the intel you need.
Before we dive into empowerment strategies, it’s important to address the elephant in the room. Stress and anxiety play a crucial role in making us believe our disempowered situations are unfixable, or our fault.
Cast your mind back to a recent personal or professional challenge. With hindsight, do you notice how your reaction was slightly or hugely disproportionate? How worried you became? How your mind starting racing to the worst-case scenario?
Challenge + Stress + Anxiety = DISPROPORTIONATE REACTION.
If this resonates, ask yourself, how would I be/think/do without stress and anxiety during that challenging situation?
Yes, the challenging situation or people may still be ever present, but I guarantee stress and anxiety make every challenge a whole lot worst. It reduces your ability to act in a manner that resources and supports you.
Stress and anxiety diminish your ability to respond which essentially means you react disproportionately and may struggle to take responsibility.
In my professional opinion, a prerequisite to an empowerment strategy must include ways to effectively release stress and anxiety daily. This will set you up for success.
Ways to release stress and anxiety are: Breathwork, Tapping, Journaling, Guided Meditation. More advance ways is with Hypnotherapy and EMDR.
Three strategies to use to feel empowered:
1. Education and Skill Building
Empowerment with education and skills is the ultimate freedom and a worthy investment. Applied knowledge helps us navigate life independently, providing us with a self-esteem boost. With increased self-reliance, we grow self-respect. When we learn new skills or knowledge and apply them to help us or people we care about, we experience pride and empowerment. Education and skill building is a real confirmation to yourself, that you are deserving of the invest of time and money.
Embracing education and skill building is a confirmation you can develop yourself in many ways at any stage of life. Life can throw us unexpected transitional moments and we must be able to adapt. There are no limitations to your capability and capacity. You can decide to resign to the challenger or rise to the challenge.
2. Cultural Context and Empowerment: Impact on Women’s Self-Image
Cultural background and biography influence a woman’s self-image, especially for British Asian women. There are often societal expectations, cultural norms, and religious obligations placed upon Women. For some Women, these provide sanctuary and sense of meaning and purpose whereas for other women, a burden. The family environment dictates the level of freedom Women exercise. Women in Patriarchal environments may be dictated to or oppressed in extreme situations and may feel disempowered.
Empowerment requires Women to make decisions for themselves, to advocate for their needs and importantly to exercise freedom to carve their own identity culturally, societally, and religiously without fear of being judged or worse, being socially excluded. Empowered women embrace their uniqueness and strength. Empowered women are free to change their minds, adding or subtracting traits or obligations according to their philosophy and stage of life.
3. Self-care and Emotional Regulation
Q: Do you prefer to be around
- energised and enthusiastic person or
- tired and depleted person
The answer will always be an A, right?!
Women especially Mums tend to put themselves last on the list when it comes to proper time out and care. It’s important to unwind from life’s routines and demands. Women often struggle with guilt, believing taking time out means they are neglecting their obligations. Let’s reframe this mindset, taking time out means when you come back into the arena of family life or work, you will be recharged and much more focused rather than depleted and lacking energy. You may be so used to running on empty that you no longer recognise a break is what you need.
You may be comfortable playing the role of Mum that being independent or cultivating other parts of your identity feels uncomfortable. Putting yourself first is a skill and the benefits to your overall well-being ripples to everyone in your life. Do things that make your heart sing, preferably in nature.
I don’t endorse hours of binge-watching TV shows in the name of self-care. I’m a huge advocate for nourishing your mind with teachings that help you to evolve and grow higher capabilities when it comes to your emotional wellness.
It’s important to connect with friends and family so you feel part of a community or support network. It’s also important to slow down and learn to be still so you can pay attention to your emotions. There may be a reason why you maintain a busy schedule, unconsciously, trying to avoid or distract yourself from feelings that are overwhelming.
If this is the case, it’s important to recognise you may need to seek help from a Life Coach/Transformation to help you navigate the big feelings. Remember this, the negative emotions or thoughts are not the issue, the way you are reacting is causing the issues. You can learn to respond in new ways with coaching.
When you apply these three strategies you will become empowered.
A deeper level of empowerment can also be reached through identifying, defining, and living from your core values. This is a sure way to build a flourishing relationship with yourself.
